Illustration F18 - Andrew
Class Assignment #1
The piece, titled Album Cover (1975), was illustrated by Eyvind
Earle for a 1975 Jazz album by Sonny Fortune for Horizon and A&M Records.
The cover as you would have found it in a store was printed on ink and paperboard.
The painting that was used for the image would have been painted with oils on either
canvas on wood or on Masonite. His style lends itself to the album in trying to
show beauty in the nature its presenting. Earle’s works were usually based
in surrealism which goes well with the flow of Jazz.
Eyvind Earle (1916-2000) was a California based artist. He was
a master at creating unique and vivid landscapes that can capture the
imagination with his use of color and the ability to create distance with the
use of landmasses. He worked in many creative circles, mainly living off his
paintings, but he also illustrated for magazines and advertisements. He worked
in the film industry, creating many masterpieces like the backgrounds that you
would find in the Disney movie “Sleeping Beauty”, and having the credit of
designing the Universal Pictures logo the way we see it today.
I would say that the intended audience at the time would have
been anyone that’s a active Jazz listener as well as anyone that is a fan of Earle's work.
